Update: mechanic says it’s the oil filter cooler gasket. It decided it didn’t want to be a gasket anymore. The part’s in stock and should have it back in half a day. Right around $600, so not the worst news.
What could cause a copious oil leak in a 2013 Pentastar V6 in the area between the cylinder heads? The engine is running perfectly (albeit with 228k miles) but when running it’s leaking a pretty substantial amount. It’s never had any engine problems, and it doesn’t have the cylinder head flaw that some of those engines have had.

Pentastar
There’s your problem. The 3.8 EGH in my 2011 Jeep with only 38k miles on it has a seeping valve cover gasket, and they’ve have over thirty years to figure that engine out.

My guess as well. Gasket failure.

Isn’t the oil filter housing lined up with the valley?

I feel like I should be in this business. Do you stay local or drive all over the country?

The Chrysler workers were taking a break for those 30 years. Don’t expect it to end soon.

Apparently the oil cooler is in the valley, and it’s apparently prone to failure? Although, that’s apparently only really a thing on 2014+ engines?

Usually the big leak in the valley is the oil filter housing block. It cracks from use and is plastic. Generally from over tightening, but in your case probably just tons of use.
Thats got to be a mileage record for one of these engines. Any other issues? I have a 2012, it had the left head replaced for the misfire issue at 20k, but the 2013's aside from very early production had the revised head.

My first thought was valve cover gasket, but apparently that’s also where the filter and cooler are as well, so? The filter’s probably the easiest thing to check first.

It’s mostly local stuff, but statewide. I maintain our fleet of mostly vans and a couple cars. The majority of our drivers use their own cars though.

Looks like the filter is below the leak though. That was my first thought too.

We had that with one other Ram van, but per our mechanic he said that if these engines get past a certain mileage without developing problems that it probably isn’t one of the affected ones. This one is way past that and it’s still running great. Well, except for this.

No, this one has been great. One other one had to have the redesigned heads put on, but no problems since.

two options. can of gasoline and a book of matches.... or fix the leak.

Glad to hear it. My 2012 is at a paltry 37k but only gets driven when I wheel, about 2,500 a year anymore. But it’s a tough 2,500 miles. It gets its oil changed once a year at that rate, but has always been every 5k good when it was still a daily driver. Always a Mopar filter and synthetic. Other than the head for the misfire, it hasn’t had a single issue with the motor.

We replaced the transmission at 206k. It had been fine, but something severed a cooler line and the fluid bled out. Since then the replacement transmission shat the bed but was replaced under warranty. Other than that it’s been routine maintenance, windshields, and tires.

That’s crazy mileage either way.

Two of the Ram vans I have had alternated on a route that does 300 miles per day, so that’s why they happen to have so many miles.
